End Summer Hunger http://www.skhelpline.org/postdetail.php?postid=25#postcomment The last day of school for South Kitsap School District schools is this Friday, June 18th, 2010.  That means students who normally receive free or reduced school breakfasts and lunches will be hard-pressed to fulfill those needs in their already challenged pantries at home this summer.  Fortunately, this need is assisted with a couple of resources available to families within the South Kitsap area.

South Kitsap Helpline offers an End Summer Hunger supplemental program to meet the needs presented by families with school-aged children.  Families do not need to sign up to take part, just notify our food bank intake office of your need.

The South Kitsap School District offers a Summer Lunch Camp that provides free lunch and fun activities for youth aged 18 and under.  The camp is located at three different schools this year (Orchard Heights Elementary, Sidney Glen Elementary, and East Port Orchard Elementary).  They take place every Monday-Friday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, June 21 through August 20 (except July 5).

Feeding South Kitsap http://www.skhelpline.org/postdetail.php?postid=63#postcomment

Let's obliterate hunger in our community. In one day.

August 18, 2011

Join us for the third annual Feeding South Kitsap collection campaign. On August 18, 2011, our community will unite to obliterate hunger. For three hours, volunteers will canvass neighborhoods and collect food donations for the South Kitsap Helpline Food Bank. As it was once said, “A hungry man is not a free man”. Our small actions, when joined together, created remarkable results. Hunger is a crippling force within our community. However, we were presented with a choice to stand united and alienate hunger, one child, one senior citizen, one family at a time and on August18, we will stand together in this effort of Feeding South Kitsap.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS...

- Register your team online
- Pack your car with your friends
- Show up to SK Helpline on August 18 at 4:30pm
- Canvass your selected neighborhood from 5-8pm asking for food donations & picking up sacks of groceries from -porches
- Fill your trunk with the food
- Return to Helpline to donate the food
- Go out for ice cream sundaes to celebrate!

Higher Needs http://www.skhelpline.org/postdetail.php?postid=7#postcomment Sitting here at my desk, trying to get bills paid, and filing done, the phone rings endlessly it seems. Each call has me a little more disheartened to answer the phone. The needs out in our community right now are much greater than anything we could hope to help. I must have taken 5 different phone calls in a 30 minute period for people asking for help with their electric bill or help with motel costs because they are homeless and out of funds. The needs are getting greater and the donations just couldn't begin to keep up with the need, especially when they are slowing down rather than coming in. How do you tell someone..... I'm sorry we don't have the money to help you keep your heat on.....or I'm sorry you have to sleep outside somewhere because we can't help you stay in a motel...? These are difficult times, and very difficult situations...

Tick Tock tick tock.... http://www.skhelpline.org/postdetail.php?postid=6#postcomment Our time is winding down on Bay Street, we're getting ready to dive into the next chapter of our organizations story! It is such an exciting time for us, getting out of the consignment/thrift industry and jumping into the nursery business!!! A much more healthy endeavor for us, and for the community. We've already started growing tomatoes, broccoli, herbs & flowers! The farmers market starts this weekend, and we will be having plants for sell down there. We are pre-selling Mother's Day Hanging Baskets, which should be absolutely beautiful, a tradition that EB & Kay started years before at the nursery that we are more than pleased to carry on with! Our Bay Street location is starting to look a bit emptier than usual, and there's a buzz in the air of the coming change!!! There is still so much more to do to get ready for the big move...

Upcoming Classes http://www.skhelpline.org/postdetail.php?postid=33#postcomment

Port Orchard has three great art classes scheduled for August.  Sign up today to ensure a spot in one of the classes!

Create Your Own Silverware Wind Chimes $25

Wednesday, August 11 from 6-8:30pm OR Wednesday, August 25 from 6-8:30pm at the Port Orchard Nursery Patio

Remember back in the 70's when everyone took grandma's silverware and made wind chimes out of it?  Well, we're going to take them to the next level!  Using recycled silverware and beautiful colored glass beads, you will create a fantastic, unique piece of musical art that you can hang in your garden.  You'll enjoy listening to them for a lifetime!  Ages 18+.

Mosaic Stepping Stones $35

Class takes place over two evenings, Monday, August 16 AND Wednesday, August 18 from 6-8:30pm at the Port Orchard Nursery Patio.

Create one-of-a-kind decorative stepping stones to brighten your garden path.  Bring broken tile, glassm pottery, and anything else you desire; along with 20x20 plywood boards (in the scrap wood section of any lumber yard), some clothes you can get messy in, and your creativity! South Kitsap artist Suanne Martin Smith furnishes the other supplies.  Ages 18+.

Beginning Paper Making $45

Class takes place over two evenings: Tuesday, August 24 AND Thursday, August 26 from 6-8:30pm at the Port Orchard Nursery Patio

This is a fantastic class for those who love to get their hands right into the middle of things. You will start with learning how pulp mixes (in a paper beater), then using a decal and mold you will actually be making sheets of handmade paper.  This class is wet and fun, so bring your rubber boots and an apron.  Let's start making paper!  Ages 18+.

Call 360-876-4089 for more information or to register for a class.
